Not every supplier on Chinese platforms is legitimate. While most are honest businesses, scams and low-quality suppliers do exist. Here’s how to separate the reliable from the risky.
1. Check Business Registration
Every legitimate Chinese business has a registered business license. On platforms like 1688 and Alibaba, look for:
- Verified business license on the supplier’s profile
- Company name matches across platform, website, and communication
- Registration date — older companies are generally more stable
2. Review Transaction History
On 1688 and Alibaba, transaction history is public:
- How many transactions have they completed?
- What’s their transaction volume?
- How long have they been active on the platform?
A supplier with thousands of completed transactions over several years is far more trustworthy than a new store with no history.
3. Read Reviews Carefully
Don’t just look at the star rating:
- Read recent reviews (last 3-6 months)
- Look for reviews with photos from actual buyers
- Pay attention to negative reviews and how the supplier responded
- Be skeptical of stores with only vague 5-star reviews
4. Request Product Samples
Always order samples before committing to a bulk purchase:
- Samples let you verify quality firsthand
- They test the supplier’s communication and shipping process
- They’re a small investment that can prevent a costly mistake
5. Verify Certifications
If a supplier claims specific certifications (ISO, FDA, CE, RoHS, etc.), ask to see the certificates. Cross-reference the certificate number with the issuing organization. Legitimate suppliers will provide this readily; scammers will make excuses.
6. Do a Video Call
A real-time video call can reveal a lot:
- Ask to see their factory or office
- Request to see sample products on camera
- Assess their professionalism and communication
- Gauge whether they seem knowledgeable about their products
7. Use Secure Payment Methods
Never pay by direct bank transfer to an individual’s account:
- Use platform payment systems (Alibaba Trade Assurance)
- For off-platform transactions, use PayPal Goods & Services
- Consider using a letter of credit for large orders
